Financial Deception Is Driving Millennial Divorces

Q: What impact do finances have on divorce rates?

Is my spouse or significant other hiding something? That’s a question many people considering a divorce in Pennsylvania may be asking themselves. But while some would interpret the question as applying to infidelity, Love and Money survey by TD Bank suggests another kind of secret is behind the break-ups of many millennials.

Apparently, one-third of the people surveyed would consider a break-up if their partner kept a financial secret.

Divorce and Updating Your Estate Plan

Q: Should I update my estate plan during my divorce?

It’s a common scenario that most married couples, especially those with children, will have an estate plan drafted at some point during their marriage. What they may lose sight of in the turmoil that can accompany getting divorced in Pennsylvania is how important reviewing and updating their estate plan is – ideally as soon as possible after filing for divorce.

State laws differ and most states have provisions that completely or partially terminate a spouse’s right to inherit from and/or act as a fiduciary for their soon-to-ex-spouse.

Marital Agreements and Sham Agreements

Q: What happens to a marital agreement if the marriage is invalid?

Most people would not be shocked to hear that a prenuptial agreement was entered into between a wealthy young heiress and her high-profile hairdresser husband-to-be. There would be no surprises that the father of the bride would want to protect his and his daughter’s financial legacy in the event of a future break up. After all, this is how prenuptial agreements have been played out in Hollywood for decades.

The Santa Clause: The Christmas Classic About a Family Law Dispute

Disputes over the fairness of child custody agreements are more common during the holiday season than at any other time of the year. Perhaps the greatest indication of this fact is that a classic Christmas movie uses this very scenario as its main plot device.

How Does The Santa Clause Relate to Family Law?

In The Santa Clause, Tim Allen plays a man who is frustrated to learn that his ex-wife and her new partner have told their son there is no Santa Claus.

Domestic Violence and Divorce

71 were shot
30 were stabbed
10 were beaten
5 were strangled
6 were killed in some other way

In total, 122 Pennsylvania victims of domestic violence died last year. 68% were killed by a former or current intimate partner.

It is easy to think “this will never happen to me” or “ what is happening to me is not that serious,” but the truth is 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner.

Benefits of a Postnuptial Agreement

Q: Why would couples consider a postnuptial agreement?

Most people have heard of the prenuptial agreement because they are often referred to stereotypically in motion pictures as being needed before the marriage of a wealthy, old man and a pretty, younger “gold digger”.

In the real world, Reading marital agreement attorneys use prenuptial agreements in any situation—and often in second marriageswhere a couple wants to decide before they are married what property will remain separate and what property will become marital property in the event the marriage fails.

Divorcing When Happily Married

Q: What is a “medical divorce”?

Reading, Pennsylvania divorce attorneys expect clients who come to them wanting a divorce to be ready-- and even eager-- to untie the knot. Common reasons people get divorced are standard “irretrievably broken or irreconcilable differences” factors including infidelity, addiction, domestic abuse, different spending habits or parenting styles, or just growing apart. But sometimes couples who are very much in love and who both want to remain together find themselves seeking a divorce.

Why would a happily married couple get divorced?

To avoid financial ruin. Such is the reason for the phenomenon known as “medical divorce”.

When Revenge Comes Back To Bite You

Hey ladies
When your man wanna get buck-wild
Just go back and hit 'em up style
Put your hands on his cash and spend it to the last dime
For all the hard times

-“Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” by Blu Cantrel

In the early 2000s, the R&B artist Blu Cantrell topped the charts with this catchy tune that still makes me cringe every time I hear it.

It is the revenge song to end all revenge songs. The singer catches her man cheating, so she goes on a shopping spree, destroys his personal items, and then sells everything else “till there was just nothin' left.” She then brags that she paid all the bills late, and implies that she took or sold his car and home.

If Ms.

Calculating Spousal Support: The Most Complicated Math Problem Of Your Life

We all learn 2+2=4 and y=mx+b, but none of the math you learned in school will prepare you for the number crunching that comes with divorce. Legal math is unlike any other math you will ever encounter.

There is a lot of wiggle room in legal math, especially in the family law context.
